It is also home to a plethora of outdoor havens such as Little River Canyon National Preserve, DeSoto State Park, Buck’s Pocket State Park, and High Falls Park. 

This hidden gem we are referring to is DeKalb County, and it is a nature lover’s paradise. 

Cradled in the valley below Lookout Mountain & Sand Mountain is the county seat of DeKalb County, Fort Payne, Alabama. Fort Payne is a charming southern town that offers a little something for everyone. From the historic main street that hosts a variety of local shops and restaurants to the museum and fan club dedicated to the hometown boys in the country music supergroup “Alabama”, there is lots to explore in this small Alabama town. And if you are looking for outdoor adventure, look no further! Fort Payne is considered the gateway to Alabama’s portion of the Appalachian Mountains, and with one quick turn up Lookout Mountain your Appalachian adventure will begin. 

Lookout Mountain is home to some of the most beautiful places in Alabama. Little River Canyon National Preserve, DeSoto State Park, and DeSoto falls are full of breathtaking views that leave visitors speechless. Little River Canyon is a 650’ canyon where you can see the sparkling Little River below from a choice of seven scenic overlooks along the canyon rim. While in the park, you will find Little River Falls, hiking trails, and the Jacksonville State University Canyon Center with a gift store and information station. DeSoto State Park has an impressive hiking/biking trail system, aerial adventures, a restaurant, lodge, rental cabins, chalets, and campgrounds. DeSoto Falls has a magnificent 104’ drop, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the State. The best way to explore all the mountain has to offer is the scenic drive along the Lookout Mountain Parkway. The short drive holds an abundance of beauty, natural scenic treasures, and many wonderful things to see and do. 

While on Lookout Mountain you can visit the quaint village of Mentone. Mentone captures the cultural essence of Lookout Mountain through its artistic spirit and cozy environment. In Mentone, you’ll find charming shops, delicious eateries, and art galleries that showcase local artists’ works. This little town is filled with a unique blend of creativity and Southern hospitality. As you wander through Mentone, you’ll experience a warm, welcoming community that celebrates both its rich heritage and its vibrant cultural scene, making it a perfect spot to unwind and embrace the charm of Lookout Mountain.

On the other side of the valley lies more great outdoor locations atop Sand Mountain. There’s High Falls Park, a beautiful waterfall with an extraordinary natural bridge. There is also Buck’s Pocket State Park, a spectacular natural canyon pocket of the Appalachian Mountain foothills. The park features hiking trails, a campground, and an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) trail. While driving to these outdoor locations, you can stop in several more charming southern towns including Rainsville, Fyffe, Henagar, Sylvania, and Ider.
