On Monday, April 8, 2024, Ohio residents and visitors will be able to experience something that won’t happen in Ohio again until 2099 – a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the Sun. The last one visible in Ohio occurred in 1806. It is common for people to travel hundreds of miles which significantly impacts local population numbers during a total eclipse event. So, Come Early, and Stay Late, in Miami County, Ohio. The total solar eclipse will last about 3 ½ minutes, but the fun will last all weekend long.  

Outdoor Activities

There are activities being planned at more than a dozen locations around Miami County from Friday, April 5, 2024, through Monday, April 8, 2024, including many of the County’s public libraries, the Fairgrounds, parks throughout the area, and in our historic downtowns. On Friday evening, you can dance the night away in downtown Troy at the Solar Eclipse Shuffle or dance in the streets at the Tipp City Block Party on Saturday afternoon. And, on Saturday evening, you are sure to have a GRAND time at the Grandstands Eclipse Concert at the Miami County Fairgrounds.

On Sunday, gear up for Piqua’s Alien Street Festival and spend A Night in the Stars in downtown Troy with entertainment and activities for the whole family. Round out your time in Miami County with the Solar Space Race in West Milton, the Total Eclipse at the Park in Pleasant Hill, or the Lost Creek Eclipse Experience in Troy where wide-open spaces are abundant and viewing the eclipse will be magical.

Remember that the only safe way to look directly at the eclipsed sun without damaging the eyes is through special eclipse glasses that are AAS approved. A limited quantity of glasses will be available throughout Miami County at libraries and during eclipse events.
