We invite you into Geary County, the vibrant Heart of the Flint Hills, nestled in the center of Kansas, the Midwest, and the US! This diverse community, encompassing the lively cities of Fort Riley, Grandview Plaza, Milford, and Junction City, is a delightful destination for those ready to embrace adventure, history, and notable celebrations. Though every season has their own exceptional reasons to visit, Geary County prepares to take full advantage of the picturesque outdoors and recreation opportunities that can be found throughout the county and roll out a red carpet of stimulating events and activities for the Summer that promise fun and memorable moments for all.

Excitement grows as May begins and the anticipation of warmer weather and all that comes with it comes to an end. Geary County is home to Milford Lake, which happens to be Kansas’s largest lake, Geary State Fishing Lake, numerous ponds, rivers, and wetlands, and 29 lakes and bodies of water on the Fort Riley installation that provide vast opportunities for recreation and time in the Sun. We are also home to miles of trails, meant for everything from hiking and biking to horseback riding and even motorcycling in specific areas.

For those just as interested in celebrations as they are about the outdoor recreation need to take note of the awesome options found in Geary County. The kickoff of the season’s festivities happens at Freeman Field, where Balloons, Bands, and Barbeque takes center stage. This event has something for everyone in the family including kid friendly activities, live music, a car show, and vendors as well as the vibrant colors and majestic setting created by the hot air balloons. And what’s a festival without food? Sink your teeth into mouthwatering barbeque that falls right off the bone, a true feast for the senses. Bring your chairs, blankets, kites, and sunscreen and spend the day watching the kids as they enjoy bounce houses, the foam zone, and expel their energy trying to fly a kite before attempting to win at the water wars station.

As we glide into June, the thrill-seekers and sports enthusiasts among us will find plenty to cheer about at the historic Rathert Field while taking up an evening of America’s favorite pastime. The Junction City Brigade, Geary County’s dynamically talented collegiate baseball team, takes to the field, promising high-octane games that keep the adrenaline pumping. The stands are alive with fans, the aroma of delicious snacks fills the air, and refreshing beverages are available at the beer garden and concession stand. For something messier and less organized get ready to rev your engines at Mud Bog Madness, where ATVs, trucks and other vehicles kick up a storm in a high-energy, muddy spectacle that draws crowds and cheers.

As Summer hits its peak, Geary County doesn’t ease up on the gas pedal for July; instead, Junction City becomes the epicenter of a five-day celebration for Independence Day. Freedom Fest is an extravaganza and highlight of the year, offering a cornucopia of delectable food stalls, unique vendors, live entertainment, and free live concerts nightly. July fourth is the busiest and most anticipated day of the week-long event starting with a parade and finishing with an exhilarating fireworks show. Each day brings new surprises and delights, ensuring that Freedom Fest is an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

So, whether you’re a local or just passing through, Geary County is the place to be for a summer packed with excitement, culture and community spirit. From the breathtaking views of the Flint Hills, the outdoor recreation opportunities, to the lively events that fill the calendar, this is a destination where fun and adventure meet you at every turn. Come join the festivities and create memories that will warm your heart all year round!
