A Hidden Gem Along the Mississippi River: The Rock Island Swing Bridge

Just outside the Twin Cities, nestled along the mighty Mississippi River, lies one of Minnesota’s most unique landmarks: the Rock Island Swing Bridge. More than just a bridge, this historic structure offers sweeping 360-degree views of the river, fascinating stories of industry and gangsters, and access to scenic trails perfect for walking or biking. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or casual explorer, the Rock Island Swing Bridge is a must-visit destination in Inver Grove Heights.
Built in 1894, the Rock Island Swing Bridge once spanned the Mississippi River, connecting Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, with St. Paul Park. It was one of the few double-decker bridges on the river, with railroad traffic on the upper level and vehicles on the lower level. The bridge was also notable as one of Minnesota’s toll bridges and among the last of its kind with a final toll of just 75 cents.
Adding to its mystique, the bridge is rumored to have been used as an escape route by infamous gangster John Dillinger. Rail traffic ceased in 1980, and road traffic followed in 1999. For nearly a decade, the bridge sat dormant in its open position until community advocacy helped save it from complete demolition. In 2011, the Rock Island Swing Bridge was reborn as a 680-foot recreational pier, opening to the public on June 11. Today, visitors can explore interpretive signs, view original bridge components, and learn about the preservation efforts that kept this iconic landmark alive.
The Rock Island Swing Bridge also serves as a trailhead for the Mississippi River Greenway, one of the region’s most scenic trail systems. Stretching 28 miles from South St. Paul to Hastings, the Greenway offers stunning river valley views, opportunities for birdwatching, sightings of bison, and access to observation decks—including one at Lock and Dam No. 2. Every mile of the trail offers something new to discover.
As night falls, the Rock Island Swing Bridge truly comes alive. A dazzling light show illuminates the bridge every evening, fall and winter from 5–10 p.m., and spring and summer from 7–10 p.m. Every 15 minutes, a five-minute display of dancing lights highlights the bridge’s structure and adds a magical glow to the riverfront. Nearby local favorites, Mississippi Pub and Overboard Bar & Grill, offer great food and fantastic views of the bridge.
Inver Grove Heights invites you to linger a little longer after your visit to the Rock Island Swing Bridge, with unique attractions, excellent dining, cozy hotels, and genuine Minnesota hospitality. Make this hidden gem along the Mississippi River a must-stop on your Midwest bucket list—just minutes from the best of the Twin Cities.
