Liberal serves up magic inspired by The Wizard of Oz.

Liberal, in Southwest Kansas, has welcomed travelers since its earliest days as the “Liberal Well,” where water was freely offered to anyone passing by. That same hospitality continues today—now enhanced by the magic of The Wizard of Oz. As the official hometown of Dorothy Gale, Liberal proudly celebrates its place in Oz lore.
At Dorothy’s House and the Land of Oz, visitors can step into Dorothy’s world by clicking their heels three times and following guides—often dressed as Dorothy—down the Yellow Brick Road. The tour winds through a replica of her farmhouse, into Oz itself, and ends with a rare treasure: a model of Dorothy’s home similar to the one used in the 1939 film. Adding to the enchantment is Liberal’s newest attraction, the 10-foot glittery red Dorothy Slipper Slide, a sparkling, ruby-colored slipper that invites visitors of all ages to enjoy a playful moment in Dorothy’s hometown.
Beyond Oz, Liberal offers rich history and culture. The Mid-America Air Museum, Kansas’ largest general aviation collection, features nearly 100 aircraft, including unique pieces such as the smallest-ever “Air Force One,” used by President Eisenhower. The Coronado Museum explores history dating back to 1541, with artifacts from Coronado’s expedition, early Kansas settlement, and Native American cultures.
Families can immerse themselves in creativity at the Baker Arts Center, where hands-on activities like building with LEGOs, designing on a giant Lite-Brite, and adding bursts of color to interactive spaces encourage imagination.
Every Shrove Tuesday, Liberal hosts International Pancake Day, beginning with breakfast and followed by races for all ages. The highlight is the friendly competition against Olney, England, as women race with pancake and skillet in hand. A Shriving Service and parade round out the celebration.
For nature enthusiasts, Arkalon Park offers camping, hiking, fishing, and excellent birding along the Cimarron River valley.
