Take a Two-Day River Road Trip this Fall

If you’re itching for a short escape this fall without venturing too far from home, consider a two-day trip through the top of West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Brooke and Hancock Counties are filled with small-town charm, good food, and great views. When the leaves change, usually in mid-October, this river valley explodes with color.

Day 1:

Start your trip near Chester, WV, where a quick stop at the World’s Largest Teapot sets the tone. It’s quirky, it’s unexpected, and it’s worth a photo. Then head just a few minutes down the road to Frank’s Pastry Shop for some delicious, fresh doughnuts.

Next, make your way to Tomlinson Run State Park, just a short drive away. This time of year is especially beautiful at the park, with colorful foliage lining the trails and reflecting off the lake. Be sure to check out the “Almost Heaven” selfie swing to capture the perfect photo of the season.

After taking in the views, head to Fiesta Tableware Company in Newell. Their retail outlet is full of locally made pottery that’s as colorful as the leaves. You can even call ahead to schedule a factory tour and see how each piece is made. Many are still shaped, glazed, and finished by hand.

From there, continue south on WV Route 2 to Mountaineer Casino Resort, where you can try your luck at slots or catch a horse race if the timing is right. Grab lunch at one of the casino’s four restaurants, then continue following the river down to Weirton, WV. Cruise around downtown to see some of the movie set locations from Super 8,  or pop into the Weirton Area Museum for a closer look at movie memorabilia and a deep dive into local history.

For dinner, you can’t go wrong with Theo Yianni’s menu of Greek-American dishes. Be sure to save room for the baklava cheesecake! Call it a night at one of Weirton’s hotels, and get some rest before another full day of activity.

Day 2:

Kick off the morning with a breakfast sandwich from Tudor’s Biscuit World, then stop by the Top of West Virginia visitors center to grab locally made gifts and browse the Summit Art Gallery, located in the same building.

Take Route 2 south along the Ohio River and make a few stops in Follansbee, WV, where you’ll find small businesses like Moe’s on Main and the Bluewave Center shops offering seasonal décor, vintage finds, and handmade goods.

Continue on to Wellsburg and head up to Brooke Hills Park to enjoy the crisp air and more views of leaves throughout their disc golf course. Grab one last meal at the Station Grille, a historic train station turned restaurant that offers hearty meals and great service.

Wrap up your trip in Beech Bottom. Before hitting the road towards home, stretch your legs with a walk along the scenic Pioneer Trail. Or if you have kiddos with you, burn off some energy at the playground at Third Street Park

Whether you’re here for the scenery, the food, or just a change of pace, this sliver of West Virginia offers a refreshing break from the routine. It’s an easy drive with plenty of worthwhile stops, especially in the fall. You don’t have to travel far to find something new.
