Sandusky County, Ohio will help mark the nation’s 250th birthday with hometown pride, hands-on history, and more

In 2026, Sandusky County, Ohio will help mark the nation’s 250th birthday with hometown pride, hands-on history, and plenty of reasons to explore this small Northwest Ohio’s location that is brimming with rich history. The county seat of Sandusky County is Fremont, Ohio and is also the location of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. It is America’s first presidential library and features a newly renovated museum with plenty of Presidential and American History. You can also catch a tour of Rutherford and Lucy Hayes’ beautiful historic home.
A signature moment arrives on Saturday, July 4, 2026, when Spiegel Grove hosts an America 250 Picnic. Visitors can enjoy games from days past, kids’ activities, curator talks, and speakers delivering historic speeches across the shaded, 25-acre estate of President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes. Bring your own picnic or purchase food on-site, then stay for the annual Independence Day Concert by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra (2–3:30 p.m.) on the lawn in front of the historic Hayes Home.
America 250 momentum continues beyond the Fourth. In early October, Spiegel Grove will present the special outdoor exhibit “Eyes of Freedom,” a traveling memorial honoring those who served and sacrificed (Oct. 3–5, 2026). Programs like these connect big national milestones to personal stories, and they make Fremont a natural basecamp for anyone building a 2026 road trip around history, heritage, and community.
Out in the landscape, Sandusky County’s story is also painted larger than life. Northwest Ohio’s America 250 Barn mural is part of the county’s Historic Barn Mural Trail, created by Scott Hagan, known as “The Barn Artist.” Located on U.S. 20 west of Fremont, the mural turns a working landmark into a bold, roadside tribute that’s easy to visit year-round. Pair it with other barn murals to create a self-guided art-and-history tour that celebrates Sandusky County’s rich culture and history.
Beyond Fremont, communities across the county add their own chapters through concerts, exhibits, local history programs, and family-friendly gatherings. Many events align with America 250-Ohio’s statewide themes and events calendar, making it simple to connect Sandusky County celebrations with other regional stops across Ohio. Between events, explore downtown shops, local restaurants, riverfront views, and museums that keep the region’s stories alive.
