Geary County, KS

The complexity of the Spring season, including the end of hibernation and reawakening of the land, calls for a visit to Geary County, KS, where the opportunities are vast and will  satisfy any traveler.

For those looking to find entertainment indoors, plan a visit to the historic C.L. Hoover Opera House for a tour and a show.  Choose from options including live musical stage performances by vocalists, bands, or traveling groups, or enjoy theatrical performances by the members of Kansas’s longest running community theater, Junction City Little Theater.

Geary County Historical Society has the perfect event for the history loving traveler, a Live Reenactment Weekend at the Spring Valley Historic Site.  Utilizing the existing cabin and schoolhouse for education and entertainment along with 18-foot tipis, tomahawk throwing and archery lessons, Ojibwe dancers, gunfighters, a Territorial Marshal, just to name a few, the GCHS creates an experience not soon to be forgotten.

A more nature focused experience, including colorful butterflies and furry critters, is the Milford Nature Center and its butterfly pavilion, a free entertaining and educational experience.  Inside you’ll find live animal exhibits featuring snakes, amphibians, turtles, lizards, prairie dogs, and many more. Outdoors is a large bird of prey exhibit featuring many native raptors including both a Bald Eagle and a Golden Eagle.  Parallel to the Nature Center is a state-of-the-art Fish Hatchery, its’ objective is the rearing of sport fish for more than 300,000 Kansas anglers.

Milford, is also known as the “Fishing Capitol of Kansas,” due to being home to the largest lake in the state. The lake is stocked with a wide variety of fish including crappie, bass (largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted), walleye, and catfish (blue and channel), among others, which brings anglers from across the country for a visit.  Tournaments and contests are often held at Milford Lake, and 2026 will be no different with three already on the calendar, including Catfish Chasers in March.  Conveniently, the area offers a multitude of lodging and camping options both on and off the State Park lands; therefore, visitors will have the convenience of somewhere to stay during their multi-night visit.

Lesser known, but with just as varied a selection of fish to catch, is Geary State Fishing Lake; a deep clear lake which offers anglers a great experience on a smaller scale.   This area also has a magnificent hidden treasure; just a short hike down the trail on the Westside you’ll discover Geary Lake Falls.  The picturesque 35-foot-high waterfall is on the spillway of the lake and relies on rainfall (or Spring Showers) to raise the lake level that then causes the spillage over this beautiful natural wonder.  The area is beautiful even if the falls are dry, and the surrounding land offers opportunities for camping and hunting year-round.

Fortunately, whatever your ideal visit looks like, we have everything you need to make it complete.  Contributing to the perfect Spring Trip are options such as our culturally diverse restaurants and food trucks, lodging which includes a resort on the lake as well as campsites and RV parks, hotels in town, and shops suitable for an indulgent spree or just the necessities.
