The American Revolution was not won in a single battle. It was won here, in the Carolina backcountry.

Across South Carolina’s Olde English District, the war unfolded in dense forests, courthouse squares, frontier homes, and open fields where neighbor fought neighbor and ordinary people shaped the future of a nation not yet born.

Now, 250 years later, the Backcountry Revolution Trail invites visitors to step into the places where history turned.

From the rugged battlefield at Kings Mountain to the living history of Historic Brattonsville, from the Lancaster County Historic Courthouse Museum to the battle-scarred grounds of Historic Camden, the trail spans seven counties connected by grit, sacrifice and the fight for independence.

Along the way, discover the untold stories of women, African Americans and the Catawba Nation whose courage helped shape America. These are not distant legends or forgotten names. They are real people who stood their ground even when the future was uncertain.

More than a history tour, the Backcountry Revolution Trail is a journey through the heart of the Southern Campaign and the places where the tide of the war began to change. It is a chance to experience the landscapes, stories and communities that helped define America and continue to shape the spirit of the South Carolina backcountry today.

Walk the path. Discover the grit. Join the Backcountry Revolution.
