Hells Canyon Scenic Byway – This All-American Scenic Byway offers dramatic vistas and wildlife viewing. Carved by the Snake River, Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America. At 7,993 feet it’s deeper than the Grand Canyon. Take a scenic drive to viewpoints overlooking this rugged canyon, hike the rim trails, or for an adrenaline rush book a guided jet-boat tour on the Snake River.
Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort –this is the highest ski area in Oregon, with a base elevation of 7,100 feet. In winter, adventure seekers can enjoy downhill skiing and snowboarding on dry powder, as well as Nordic skiing and snowshoe trails. Come summer, the resort area transforms into an idyllic spot for hiking, mountain biking and camping.
National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center – Perched on a hilltop, this interpretive center brings the pioneer era to life for visitors of all ages. Using life-size wagon displays and living-history presentations, the center dramatically tells the stories of Oregon Trail pioneers. Walk through the short hiking trails where you can still see wagon ruts forged by settlers over 150 years ago.
Sumpter Valley Railroad –This beloved narrow gauge rail line began operation in 1896, moving heavy machinery along with gold to and from the town of Sumpter. In the summer of 1976, the Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration group restored and reopened this landmark. Once again, the sound of a steam whistle echoes off the mountains, now heralding vacationers instead of rocks.
