Located just east of Indianapolis, Hancock County, Indiana is blessed with a beautiful countryside and a farming tradition. Here you will find family farms, 4-H, and FFA Chapters that all work together to form a strong agricultural base. From this base, springs the fresh food, meats and drinks that grace many restaurant tables and farm store shelves in the communities of Greenfield, Fortville, McCordsville, New Palestine, Wilkinson and Shirley.

No doubt the “Crown Jewel” of Hancock County’s Farm to Table fare is Tuttle Orchards in Greenfield. This 95 year old family owned farm operation hosts u-pick apples in the late summer and fall, a spring greenhouse with vegetables, plants and flowers, and also in the fall they host a pumpkin patch and a corn maze. They are known nationally for their award-winning apple cider, and inside their farm store they sell apple butter, jams, jellies, a variety of produce, and locally sourced meat and cheese products. Tuttle Orchards also boasts a wonderful café with a very creative chef. She creates delicious dishes that range from apple donuts, sandwiches, and delectable dishes – like herb crusted pork loin with cherry sauce.  Tuttle’s also has year-round programming, hosts school and group tours, and has a variety of “agri-fun” options on their property like a playground, hayrides in the fall, a sunflower maze, and u-pick flowers.

In northeastern Hancock County is Daniel’s Vineyard, in McCordsville. It is a family-owned business that currently makes 37 handcrafted wines from their locally grown grapes – some are canned and some are bottled. These wines range from bold reds & crisp whites to sparkling & sweet blends. They also serve a small menu of food for their wide variety of entertainment and events. This venue is family friendly and pet friendly – so everyone is welcome!

Hancock County also boasts several different butcher shops/meat markets. This includes Gettinger Custom Family Meats in New Palestine; Tyner Pond Farm in Greenfield; and Maxwell Meats in Maxwell. All three have stores where you can pick up your freshest meat products. Maxwell Meats is the sole provider to the restaurant at Hawk’s Tail Golf Course, appropriately called, “Farm to Fairway.” Tyner Pond Farm provides meat to two restaurants in town: “Griggsby’s Station” and “The Mug.” While Gettinger Meats is a frequent visitor to local festivals providing some of the freshest fair food – hamburgers, ribeye sandwiches, sausages, and other offerings.

And speaking of festivals and fairs, Hancock County boasts not one but TWO Strawberry Festivals – one in Shirley in May and one in Greenfield in June. Of course, what would any fair be without an ear of hot buttered corn on the cob. The Charlottesville Lions Club is famous for providing locally grown corn at our Hancock County 4-H Fair in June.

Lastly, as an agricultural county – Hancock County has farmer’s markets in almost every community of size. Most start up in the spring and run through the fall with the Greenfield Farmer’s market being the only one that continues inside a building on the 4-H Fairgrounds during the winter months. This is where you will find the freshest of the fresh from the many Hancock County farms. There is a variety of options – produce, meat, cheese, and even baked goods. There is something farm fresh for everyone in Hancock County.
