Those looking for a bigger adventure can access the Stone Mountain Trail just outside downtown, while Big Cherry Reservoir offers 250 acres for paddling, fishing, hiking and some especially beautiful leaf-peeping.
Fall also brings some of Big Stone Gap’s most beloved traditions. Blue Highway Fest fills town with four days of bluegrass and roots music, songwriter workshops and performances on multiple stages. Since its launch in 2022, the festival has quickly earned national attention, including the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2023 Industry Event of the Year Award. Later in October, Home Craft Days celebrates the music, artistry and heritage of Southwest Virginia with concerts, craft vendors and demonstrations of traditional skills including weaving, pottery making, basket weaving, quilting and woodcraft. The annual Carv-In Show & Sale adds another nod to the region’s artisan traditions, bringing woodcarvers together for demonstrations and a marketplace filled with one-of-a-kind creations.

Take a stroll through Big Stone Gap’s historic downtown, discover local shops and public art, or visit the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park. Housed in an impressive 1890s Victorian stone mansion, the museum is home to more than 60,000 pieces that help tell the story of Southwest Virginia, from its early settlement through the region’s coal boom.
